Thyme Oil: A Natural Cleaner & Disinfectant

Sometimes, it is the simple things that prove to be the most effective. The power of advertising has convinced the masses that only bleach or ammonia based cleaning products are effective to eliminate germs on surfaces. However, thyme oil also works wonderfully as an all natural cleaner and disinfectant. Before you learn about the benefits of using thyme oil, it may be helpful to learn more about its history.

Originally used in medicine by the Egyptians, the Romans, and the Greeks, thyme is a plant that grows up to 18 inches tall in shrub formation. The Greeks named this ancient herb 'thymos', which means 'perfume'. In ancient times, the Egyptians used thyme during the embalming process. Kings from the middle ages prescribed thyme to knights to fight off diseases. Modern scientific studies indicate that thymol, one of the active ingredients in thyme oil, has potent antimicrobial properties.

Green Cleaning With Thyme Oil

Benefits of using thyme oil as a household cleaner:

It has a sweet herbal aroma

Don't you hate holding your breath while cleaning for fear of breathing in potentially deadly chemicals? If you use thyme oil to clean and disinfect your home instead, you will no longer have to hold your breath, plus your house will smell much better afterward.

It serves as a powerful antimicrobial.

When you consider all of those 'antibacterial' or 'antiseptic' properties on conventional cleaning products, it pays to consider the fact that they are also likely to contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment and to our bodies. Thyme oil contains the beneficial kind of plant chemicals that are full of antifungal, antibacterial and anti-viral properties. Because it is so purifying, cleansing and natural, thyme oil is truly the best option as a household cleaner and disinfectant.

It is natural and safe for the ecosystem.

Thymol is not just 'plant based', it is from the essential oil which is extracted directly from the plant. There are no chemical changes. It is so effective as a natural antimicrobial, there is no need for harmful chemicals. It makes a perfect, green disinfectant. Since it comes directly from nature, it breaks down quickly, leaving no harmful residue behind.

Though the media and manufacturers of many common household cleaning products would love for you to believe that everything they sell in the grocery store is completely safe, that couldn't be further from the truth. Bleach is one of the most widely used cleaning products, but it is not at all safe for long term exposure. In fact, OSHA (Occupational Safety And Health Administration), the group in charge of regulating safety in the workplace, will require you to put on gloves and a mask while using bleach.

Like most, you probably casually use bleach at home without taking any precautions at all, even though it is very dangerous. Chlorine bleach irritates the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract just by inhaling it!  Imagine what repeated, unprotected use of this dangerous chemical can do to your body over a long period of time.

That is why it is much safer and healthier to use green cleaning methods instead. To use thyme oil as a cleaner, you can pour it into a spray bottle with a little liquid soap, some water and you have a very easy all-purpose cleaner! Or, if you'd like to add additional ingredients, include lemon, cinnamon, and grapefruit oils. Use this all-purpose cleaner to get rid of germs in your kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere in your home, naturally!
